Gabarró Hermanos has collaborated with thermo-treated wood Lunawood, the Finnish firm that distributes exclusively in our country, in the construction of four officially protected homes in the Pyrenees of Navarra.

The project, designed by architects Nazareth Gutiérrez and Rodrigo Núñez, is located in the municipality of Garralda, within the Aezkoa Valley (Navarra) and has an approach based on respect for the environment and the recovery of local construction traditions. The materials have been chosen with the utmost care. While CLT panels have been chosen for the structure and a white mortar finish using the SATE system has been chosen for the façade, the exterior envelope has been resolved with Lunawood heat-treated wood slats to pay tribute to the wood tile tradition of the zone.

The architects wanted the outdoor space of the four homes, distributed in two blocks, to blend perfectly with the natural environment, being a bridge between the original landscape of the valley and the town. Each volume houses a single home per floor and the ground floor has been used for community spaces. Sustainability is the main theme of the project, which has Passivhaus energy standards, covering environmental, social and economic aspects. That is why flexibility, adaptability, neutrality and spatial quality take center stage in the interior of homes. In this same context, the design prioritizes abundant natural light, large outdoor terraces, as well as a discreet interior color palette, which contributes to the quality of the living spaces.

The strategic use of cross-laminated wood structures improves versatility, especially for residents with reduced mobility.

Heat-treated wood 'skin' for covers

As a nice tribute to the history of the place, for the sloping roofs the architects have opted for a 'wooden skin', not with tiles, but with slatting to give it a more contemporary look. The material chosen was the 42×42 SHP slats from the Lunawood heat-treated wood brand, distributed exclusively by Gabarró. These are premium Thermowood® slats ideal for exteriors (façades and roofs), sun protection, interior design and other decorative surfaces, present in the current Gabarró Wood and Outdoor Products Catalog.

Through a process that applies heat and steam, Lunawood manages to modify the aesthetic and technical properties of the wood, for example improving the durability and dimensional stability of the wood for use in exterior applications.

For the shutters, the 42 x 42 SHP slats have been cut in half to make them thinner.

Lunawood Flanders Pine Slats

Wooden slats are one of the best options for a wide variety of projects in covering roofs, walls, porches, pergolas, fences, garden furniture, etc.

The Flanders Pine profiles for smooth exteriors with rounded edges, SHP Thermo-D from Lunawood, are specially designed to be used as exterior slats thanks to their great resistance to attacks by fungi, xylophages and adverse weather conditions.

Gabarró has in its warehouses a wide range of sizes and sections as well as variable lengths.
